Lorgues with Fayence in the Var

Part of the Anglican Mission of the Diocese in Europe

Who we are

The Anglican church of Lorgues with Fayence is the coming together of two worshipping communities in the Var.

In 1989 sisters Cecile and Jean of the Community of the Glorious Ascension retired from teaching and nursing and established the ‘Prasada’ Community in Montauroux. Shortly afterwards, they opened their new home for worship and drew a community of English speaking residents and holiday makers to them.  Cecile and Jean “retired” for a second time in May 2012 after almost twenty years of service and ministry to the local communities in the villages in the Canton de Fayence in the Var. When they returned to the Communities mother house in England, the congregation invited Rev. Peter Massey, an ordained Anglican priest, to lead them.

Peter, together with his wife Shirley, a care nurse, moved from Ireland to the Var in 2003, responding to the belief that God was calling them to minister to the English speaking community in the Var. Sunday worship started in their home in Lorgues three years later. They have also established an ’Oasis’ of rest, relaxation and renewal in their home for people who need a break to either "charge their batteries" or to simply have a holiday in the sun. In September 2013 the vision, work and commitment of many to serve the English speaking community by establishing a permanent witness to the love of God in the mission field of the northern Var was realised when these two worship centres were united and incorporated into the Anglican diocese of Europe as a new chaplaincy.  We meet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month in Fayence and on the 2nd and 4th Sundays in Lorgues.  Services are followed by a shared lunch for those who want to stay.  In the sharing of food and conversation we get to know and care for each other, sharing our joys and sorrows.

We are people who come together on a regular basis to worship the Lord Jesus Christ and support each other in learning more about the Christian faith by sharing our varied experiences and relating them to our individual journeys in faith and life.  Though part of the Anglican Communion, we come from a variety of backgrounds and welcome anyone who wants to join us. Our focus is on encouraging fellowship and sharing the gospel through action and pastoral care and to be a place of healing and growth. We seek to be church without walls, Christ-centred, people-focused and Spirit-led.

Rev Peter Massey, together with the church leadership team, seek to serve both the Christian fellowship and our wider mission to the Var.
